Vogue 1179, DKNY dress

I made my first version of this pattern last year (blogged about here). Every time I’ve worn it (and it’s been a lot) my DH has said “oh, that looks nice”. It’s one of those dresses that’s perfect to have in the wardrobe for those occasions when you’re not sure what to wear. So, I had to make another one -

The fabric for this latest one is a rayon lycra knit – it’s softer and drapier than my original version, which was made from a double-knit, but it still works very well. I like the muted autumnal colours and thought that the print had a Missoni look to it. So I have a ‘DKNY meets Missoni’ dress for not a lot of money!

There’s not a lot to tell you about this pattern, other than to say that I followed the directions pretty much as written and they worked for me. I particularly like that the instructions tell you to finish the armholes with clear elastic – it really does stop them from stretching out and gaping.

Talking of DKNY I have just bought this pattern, Vogue 1221, which is also a DKNY design.

But this one definitely isn’t going to be so fast or easy. I’ve taken a look at the instructions and the pattern pieces and was intrigued to see that the front bodice, front skirt and the waist drape is just one very strangely shaped piece, with all sorts of tucks and pleats. Phew! Hopefully, when the time comes, I shall be up to the challenge – I’m planning to give it a go later in the year. I love the style.

In the meantime I’m about to make the Hot Patterns ‘Uptown Downtown Dress’. So, more about that soon ……

  4. This dress style looks good on you and I imagine must be comfortable as well, two qualities that don't always go together! So, all the better. The pattern you picked up is really pretty. I can't wait to see which fabric you choose.

  6. Love your DKNY dress, I have the pattern and I'm going to have to take another look at it.

I also just bought the new DKNY you showed, but I haven't had the guts to look at the construction yet! This will definitely be one that I make a muslin for.

  11. I think you make this dress look better than the pattern model. And it looks sooo comfortable. Oh dear, another one to add to the list...

  16. I love your dress (Vogue 1179) best in black and I want to purchase Vogue's other DKNY dress #1221 as well, I love how it hides a plethora of bodily sins.

  18. I think it is sooooo cute. This one seems fun and funky while the black one is more sophisticated. I am sure you will get a lot of wear out of both.

  19. Great dress; looks fab on you but (cue sound effect of me grinding my teeth), NO SLEEVES. Fabulous dress for the winter if made in sweater knit but...no sleeves. Donna Karen lives in New York City. She understands that the weather gets cold and people work in places where the heat is inadequate or it's drafty. Why no sleeves?????

  27. You are the Queen of the dress. I like this version better than the first. And I liked the first so much that I bought the pattern.

  28. I like this version! The drapier fabric looks very nice on you and that print is to die for lovely. What I don't believe is that it's warm enough in your neck of the woods to be standing outside without a sweater :)

  29. This is a great look for you! My boyfriend rarely comments on what I wear, and when he does it's usually something he's already said he likes. I always assume those are my best looks!

  34. I just love this fabric. It makes for an absolutely fabulous second version of this dress.

What do you wear over top of it during this chilly weather? Cardi, jacket?

  35. Thanks to everyone for your nice comments!
To A Sewn Wardrobe - I have been wearing a cardigan over it. I have two cardis that go well with this - one is grey and the other is a raspberry colour that picks up one of the colours of the print very well. I was being very brave (or foolhardy!) posing outside for the photo without anything over the top of it - it's been cold here!

  36. Great dress! The first thing I noticed about 1221 is the model has a completely flat rear! Wish I were so lucky...very cute dress.
