Vogue 8667 - a New Year dress finished!

I can’t believe how long it has taken for me to complete my first garment of 2011! I actually had this cut out before Christmas but have only just found the time to get it finished and photographed.

After making my first version of this pattern, Vogue 8667, (blogged about here) I was keen to make another one. This one looks quite different from the last one because I have used the straight skirt and added the collar. The pattern gives you options for a few different looks.

This dress can be worn with high heels and a nice little brooch for a (Mad Men) retro/classic look but in the photo I have toughened it up a bit by wearing it with a studded belt and black boots and tights, which gives it a more casual look.

The fabric is 100% wool and I have lined it with my favourite Bemberg lining. I was interested to look back and see that the first garment I made last year was also a grey dress. This was quite coincidental. I think there must be something about the grey winter weather in London that prompts me into thinking about grey dresses! Actually, I like grey a lot. Although it is sometimes thought of as a dull shade, I like how it can be paired with so many other colours. It’s a nice neutral that makes a change from black, and, personally, I think it can look rather elegant. What do you think – is grey (or gray, if you are from the USA) a yeah or a nay?

I am feeling very happy about starting my 2011 sewing. It’s made me feel all inspired and I am now enthusiastically working out a plan for my next few projects. I hope your New Year sewing has started well and that you have some exciting projects in mind?

  2. A lovely dress - and the grey is certainly a good neutral. (much less stark than black) Opens so many options for accessorizing for different looks.

  3. Another great dress Eugenia! My thoughts: nice collar! And, I like grey too, though I do think it is particularly attractive on blonds like yourself. I still haven't started to sew anything. My house guests from Christmas just left a few days ago and I am still picking up the pieces!

  5. Beautiful dress! I love grey - in fact I'm wearing a grey skirt and tall black boots myself today. :) My 2011 sewing has been somewhat random so far, but I'm starting to get back into my routine.

  6. What a lovely dress Eugenia! It's so different from the other one you made earlier.

I agree with you: grey is a definite yeah for me. I have lot's of grey in my wardrobe (maybe even a bit too much). It's true that you can combine it with so many colours.

  7. Your dress is beautiful! I think the gray gives the look a more classic feel. In fact that is why I am a fan of gray, especially charcoal grays! I think you started with a great garment.

  15. Yay for grey! It goes with soooo many other colours without being as harsh on the paler complexion as black. (Are you keeping a tally of 'a' and 'e' respondents? What about Canadians and Antipodeans? And South Africans? I think 'e' could win....)

  18. Isn't it fun how different these two V8667 dresses are given that they are from the same pattern? I like how you styled it with the black tights and boots (you may have to post pics of you wear it with a brooch and heels, because that sounds lovely as well!).

I can never remember how to spell the color. It *is* spelled "gray" here, but I most often visually see the word in the context of the earl's tea, so I usually spell it that way - grey.

  34. It's a yea! for me. I think especially when you have coloring like yours (and mine) and gray looks especially nice as a neutral where black can be kind of harsh. BTW, you look awesomely fierce with the boots, belt and all!

  36. I too love gray and your dress turned out wonderfully. I'm sure it was plenty cold and am in awe that you're outside photographing your work when your probably freezing!

I think gray is just a great color no matter the season. I just bought a gray linen and a black and white poly print and I live in sunny California. Those are just such versatile colors - I guess I'll choose colorful accessories :)
