I'm loving the April issue of Burda magazine ...

Yes, it arrived on my doorstep this morning and straight away my heart went zing over this skirt, pattern no. 125

Burda say “The posh, slim-cut skirt lends aristocratic superiority to a wearer while a pleated hem flounce and back bow add a delightfully fanciful touch”. Hmmm I don’t know how much aristocratic superiority I’m going to be able to muster up but I really do want this skirt. I love that cute bow and with a two dot Burda rating it’s going to be pretty easy to sew.

I also love this ruffled blouse, pattern no. 105.
The only drawback with this one is the “plunging neckline”. Burda love their necklines to plunge but I’m not so keen, so if I want to make this one I’m going to have to work out a way of raising it to a respectable level!

Maybe this blouse, pattern no. 102, is more for me because I am finding myself very drawn to this style and Burda describe it as “demure”.

Those rolled up sleeves have a bit of an 80’s vibe and I’m not sure if that’s good or bad? But I do like the collar and the double breasted front with the tiny buttons. I’m going to give this one some serious consideration.

Lastly, I really like this “shirt-styled shift dress”, pattern no. 116,
There’s nothing special about the design but it looks like it’s got a nice shape and, having just come back from Miami, I can see how this would really work well as a casual dress for warm weather.

I’d love to know what you think of my choices and have any of the designs in April’s issue made your heart go zing?

  1. That first skirt is adorable. I don't think my subscription will start up until this summer, but I'm contemplating just buying this issue as a stand alone.

  3. I wasn't real inspired by anything in this issue. Though the patterns you showed will look wonderful on you! The pattern that intested me, from a "how is that constructed?" point of view was the boyfriend jacket with the pointed, extended shoulder formed with darts. The shoulder pad extends over an inch into the sleeve if I understood the directions correctly. Only one of the photos shows the shoulder profile well. The line drawing depicts a normal shoulder.
Also the jean pattern. I have heard raves about Burda pants patterns and especially the crotch curves. This looks like a good jean pattern to try.

  4. Oh, I haven't received mine yet. Are you subscribed via Unique Magazines or directly through Burda? I'm about to resubscribe and I'm trying to figure out which is quicker at delivering...

  5. The sewing course sweater is one I noticed. I'm always cold and having one in different colors would be nice. The polo tops and dress, the cargo pants and the jeans. I like the dress 108 and the shirt dress is great, but I would have to scale those back to a 34/36 and I've never done that before. I have to say, I even like the petite sleeveless dress and the cocktail dress. The men's shirt and cargos look nice too. Did you know there are instructions for a handrolled scarf? This is a good issue in my opinion. I'd like to see a men's swimsuit in one of the older 50's James Bond style. I guess I like everything. I got mine yesterday, and I order from GLP.

  7. I like your choices very much. Maybe the skirt with the bow isn't all that practical but it's definitely stylish.
The black/white blouse reminds me of another Burda Pattern (aug2009/117). That neckline is much higher than the one in this picture.
And finally I think the shirtdress is a great piece for spring and summer. In fact, I'm planning on making one myself. I already have the fabric and a pattern, now I must find the time.
I'm looking forward to see one of these pieces made up by you.

  8. Oh, I wish I could agree with you because you have such good taste, but my heart went thud when I got my issue yesterday. You picked the best of the bunch. I like it, but there's nothing I feel like I haven't already seen before. But you'll probably sew something that will make me change my mind!

  10. The skirt is awesome, and I packed a very similar shirtdress (in black) for the work trip I am currently on -- very versatile!

  12. "lends aristocratic superiority" - wow, Burda has awesome pattern descriptions! So much better than "loose bodice" or "semi-fitted skirt".

    I love Top 105!

  16. Sometimes I think the Burda descriptions don't always translate as they intended! You have picked some lovely pieces, I think the ruffly top will look great with the skirt.
We get Burda 3 months behind here in Oz which makes for very frustrating waiting!

  17. Hi Melissa - to answer your question about how I get my Burda Magazine - I don't have a subscription but my lovely local independent newsagent orders it from the wholesalers for me and puts it through my letterbox with our newpapers as soon as he gets it in. This saves me traipsing around looking for it because the arrival date into the shops seems to vary each month

  18. I was SO excited when I saw that shirtdress, but then I saw it is unfitted and just cinched. Blah. That leaves so much billowy fabric in the back. Darn!

Love the blouse though, and you can easily vary the neckline depth because the slit is literally just slit into the front. I thought their instructions for sewing it were needlessly complicated, but I love the style and that it has a zip closure so it's a little more sophisticated than a pullover.

  19. I love the shirt too! Can't wait to see your version of it. Perhaps that will be my -welcome back to sewing' project for this weekend? I have never attempted a shirt before...

  21. I'm thinking that I like the Tulip Skirt, 111A and the Long Shirt looks wonderfully, deliciously summery and comfortable 110B

  22. Love the ruffled shirt, love the skirt! I have searched in vain for a local Burda seller, and might have to bite the bullet and just subscribe. I see so many cute things made from their patterns.

  23. I just got mine in the mail and will look through it tonight, but I do like the skirt you picked, it is very pretty.
