Burda Style skirt + top = tropical madness!

For approximately 360 days of the year my latest sewn outfit looks crazily optimistic when worn in my home city of London. But last week we just happened on a few 'heatwave' days that made me glad I hadn't totally lost faith in the sun ever shining on us again.

I'll have a Tequila Sunrise please!

Both the skirt and top are made from Burda Style magazine patterns that are easy to make. The skirt is pattern no. 114 from July 2008.

Burda Style #114, July 2008
I have made the pattern before (blogged about here) but this time I left out the eyelets and tie on the front yoke because I wanted a slightly more streamlined, less sporty look (and, yes, I was being lazy!). The fabric I used is 100% cotton.

The top is taken from an even older issue of Burda, it's pattern no. 119 from the July 2007 issue.

This is also an old favourite revisited because I first made a version of the top over two years ago. I kept meaning to make another one and I'm happy that I finally have. I like the style a lot - the gathers that go into the button band add some interest and nice shaping. The fabric I used is a silk that I have had in my stash for ages.

Top out, more casual!

I hope that my choice of fabrics hasn't put you off these two really nice patterns. A dazzling sunshine yellow skirt paired with a bright and splashy flower print top is not everyone's cup of tea. I know that it's not really 'city chic' but sometimes I just can't help myself. I find I am irresistibly drawn to colours and prints that make me look like I have just stepped off a cruise ship. Is your wardrobe firmly rooted in your home climate or do you, like me, sometimes sew as if you are on a semi-permanent tropical vacation? Or, perhaps you actually do live in a hot-spot, in which case, do you sew as if you are hoping for snow?

  8. I love them! Since Texas (where I live) is having its hottest, dryest summer in over 100 years it looks quite appropriate for this time of year!

  15. Cute, cute, cute!! I love both pieces and they look great together. I try to sew for where I live, but I really like fall & winter clothing, which don't really get worn much in Texas. Now that I am in more temperate climes - bring on the wool!

  17. Slowly but surely I'm breaking out of the New York uniform of all black all the time. So I completely appreciate your enthusiasm for color! The outfit looks great and I'm sure will make you feel sunny even on a gray London day.

  18. Ha! I am going to steal your words and start describing my style as "just stepped off a cruise ship." I too love bright colors and prints. These look great together! You are making me take a second look at that skirt (the top pre-dates my subscription, boo).

  19. This is another really cute outfit! I love the color combination, it's something I definitely need more of in my wardrobe...color and lots of it!! You actually inspired my most recent post of the Jalie Jean...since you did yours in purple, I thought it was a really cool idea! When you get a chance, check it out.

Also, I hope you're very far away from all the "unrest" going on over there!! Stay safe!!

  27. This is a great brightly coloured outfit.

Why not make bright colours they always make you feel better even without any sunshine. I too, am drawn to bright colours. Better than dull and boring colours :)

  29. That outfit is smoking. I love love love the mustard color for the skirt. Ugh...jealous. What a fabulous fabric find.

The gathering in the blouse is flattering. I love the look of it too.

    Again, fab outfit!

  30. Both pieces look lovely but I especially like the blouse.
Nothing wrong with a tropical print. It brings out the sunshine even when it's cloudy.
I try to sew along with the seasons but I also grow tired easily of summersewing and turn to wintersewing long before summer is ended. I even ordered some winterfabric this morning and can't wait to start.

  31. Hi Eugenia,
Lovely skirt, I have this issue of Burda magazine and would like to sew this pattern some day. The print on the blouse is very nice. I think I am like you, I am fond of floral prints and like to make garments that are more appropriate for vacations than for the city. Probably because we have so little warm weather in our climate and try to make up for it.

PS: Hope you are safe with what was going on in London.

  32. Your outfit looks great! I have that burda mag that has the skirt in it I may just have to dig it out and make myself one. I love the yellow colour fabric you used for yours!

  33. I like it very much, Eugenia. It's such a flattering look for you. As I looked at the outfit, I thought that a skirt would be such a great way to wear a bright color that we might not normally wear next to our faces. I had never thought of that!

  34. Awesome!! Love the color and print elected, no matter if it looks like you are on a summer cruise ... you should wear the clothes they choose your heart ... that's fine ..

  35. That yellow is fabulous! I love your skirt. Tropical colours are the perfect antidote to the British summer!
